We have reviewed The Writing Framework published in July 2025. The most important things to remember are that:
- It is not statutory.
- It draws on the English National curriculum which is statutory.
- It summarises recent research.
Your setting is probably doing a lot of it already. The audits at the end of each section are helpful for subject leaders carrying out a review.
Below is a summary of how KS2Gems resources meet various recommendations set out in the Framework.
Section 1: recommends the sequenced teaching of writing. It is well worth reading the Framework’s views on purchased writing programmes which can be found on pages 91-92. Our nonfiction Writing units provide Teacher Guidance to plan a sequence of lessons using the resources in the packs. Planning your own writing sequences enables you to tailor the teaching to the needs of the children in your class, your context and work in other areas of the curriculum.

Section 3: teaching spelling systematically. Our Spelling Programme does just that. The recent update includes Teacher Guidance and paper-based versions of the activities.

Section 3: dictation as a way to practise spelling. The recent update to our Spelling Programme includes Dictation Sentences for the words contained in the word lists.
Section 4: understanding how to construct sentences. Guidance is provided in nonfiction Writing units for sentence types related to the text type. In addition, there are GPS activities linked to the objectives. For example, in Y5 using relative clauses.
Section 4: a teaching approach that gradually transfers responsibility from the teacher to the pupil. Our PowerPoints for writing include teacher modelling and opportunities for children to write in pairs or small groups before independent writing.
Section 4: teaching grammar in the context of a sound understanding of reading and writing. Our Grammar and Punctuation programme has always included short Writing Challenges. The recent update has increased the number available and created paper versions.

Section 4: rich vocabulary. Our Spelling word lists include a rich variety of vocabulary with opportunities to develop a deep understanding of meanings through: Definition, Sentence and Paragraph Challenges. Our Book Activity Packs highlight, for every chapter. key vocabulary and provide Word Workshops for those words to give children the opportunity to delve deeper and enrich their understanding. All our Topic Overview packs include Vocabulary Packs with topic specific vocabulary cards suitable for display.
Section 4: understanding the different phases of the writing process – planning, drafting, revising, editing, and sharing. Our nonfiction Writing Packs feature specific guidance for planning the different phases of writing. Resources are included for planning and Steps to Success. The Repair Shop is a fully-resourced framework for revising and editing writing.

Section 6: writing lessons can draw on pupils’ broader learning and how other lessons can incorporate writing skills. Both our Topic Overviews and Book Activity Packs highlight good opportunities for writing to enable teachers to plan their writing to fit their setting’s long term plan for writing.
