What feels like the end, is often the beginning

You know your class inside out, all their moods and foibles but now you have to say goodbye as they move on to their new class, new school or new teacher. How do you feel? Glad to be shot of them or broken-hearted?

The end of the school year is a time of mixed emotions combined with exhaustion and it can be overwhelming. There’s so much to fit in. Transition Day – whether it be a day or two or just an hour or two – is an important milestone; the bonds which tie you to your current class are stretched as you accommodate your new class of eager faces. What will they be like? Will they like me? Will I bond with them?

As your new class enter your room, nervous excitement is their companion – are the rumours true? Is the new teacher really strict or kind? You eye each other up – a pause – then you start them on the trendiest activity you could find on the internet or launch into some art to use for a welcoming display in September. The familiar buzz of children happily engaged starts as a gentle hum, rising to full crescendo as everyone relaxes, yes – it’s going to be fine!
